Notes and resources from Minnesota’s NCTM Representative – Becky Rahm

Welcome back! It’s hard to believe September is here. A new school year is a good reminder that none of us has to figure out math teaching alone. NCTM provides a national network, while Minnesota has an incredible community of math educators right here at home.

One of the best parts of being a math teacher is having other math teachers to turn to. Need a new idea? Have a lesson that totally flopped? Looking for a resource? Chances are, someone else has been there too. Connecting with other teachers gives us a chance to share what works, borrow ideas, and sometimes just realize we aren’t the only ones figuring things out as we go.

A resource to check out: NCTM offers webinars throughout the year on a variety of math teaching topics. Take a look at the upcoming offerings and see if one catches your eye. Even an hour of professional learning can give you a new idea to try.  The first one I would recommend is on September 24 at 7:00 PM entitled Starting Strong: Building a Foundation for Meaningful Mathematics Teaching and Learning and is open for all to attend for free.

Connect with Minnesota teachers: The MCTM Members Facebook group is an easy way to stay connected with math teachers across Minnesota. It’s a place to share ideas, ask questions, find resources, and hear what others are doing in their classrooms. If you haven’t joined yet, come find us!

I’ll be back each month with more NCTM resources, ideas, and opportunities. I hope this column will be one small way to help us stay connected to what’s happening beyond our own classrooms.
