May/June 1985 excerpt

Sometimes you get to put a face to a name. Each year the day before our Spring Conference is the Ross Taylor Symposium. This year’s keynote speaker is: Integrating Indigenous Perspectives into K-12 Mathematics: Training with Anton Treuer

From the now named: “National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) Ross Taylor / Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award” bears the name of two leaders in NCSM’s history.

From NCSM:

“Ross Taylor, described by his peers as a “Leader of Leaders” is so honored because of the seminal role he played in the founding of NCSM, the instant and positive impact he had on all who knew him, and his courageous support of equity. Dorothy Strong, fellow founding member of NCSM and NCSM Past President (1977-1979), said, “Ross always faced challenges with action.” Ross Taylor constantly encouraged, collaborated, and supported those who addressed inequities in the mathematics education for underrepresented groups and placed issues of equity and equitable practices at the front of the NCSM agenda.”

Are they capable of intense involvement?

Do they have a sense of humor to relate to things important to them?

Do they continue to explore things which are not assigned?

Do they reflect on their errors and learn from them?

Can they listen to each other?

Are they flexible in problem solving?

Do they know how to get help when they need it and refuse help when appropriate?
