President’s Message – February 2022

Moving Forward Survivor: 2022 Edition

I had grandiose plans for the 2021-2022 school year. New curricular materials, new instructional strategies, new tech applications, new engagement strategies. Things haven’t gone the way that I had hoped. I have implemented some changes, but the fresh start and renewed energy that I envisioned for this year has not come to fruition. Small steps do matter, including the step of showing up.

Thank you! I appreciate the work you have put in for mathematics education in Minnesota. Every time that you listened to a child who needed an adult presence, taught a lesson that sparked joy and creativity, or supported a colleague, you have made a difference. You have survived to face another day. You are enough.

As we start to emerge from the darkness of winter, I am looking ahead to bright notes in the future.

MCTM’s Spring Conference returns to Duluth for one day on April 30th. There is still time to propose a session. We have great speakers planned including keynote Raj Shah, NCTM President Trena Wilkerson, Christopher Danielson, Megan Parise Schmidt, Terry Wyberg, Gail Burrill, and many more. I have always found that my energy is renewed after attending our Spring get together. Make plans to spend the weekend in Duluth (and bring a friend). Registration and hotel information are on our website (mctm.org).

The MN Mathematics Standards Committee is slated to release the First Public Draft of the new math standards in early February. MCTM will be hosting virtual town halls later in the month to give our members the opportunity to give feedback on this important work. Look for an e-blast with details and check our website and social media for updates.
