Twitter Math Camp 2018

I was one of six educators from Minnesota that was able to attend Twitter Math Camp (TMC) in Cleveland in July.  TMC is a five-day conference put on each summer by a group of educators. I have been attend the past three summers, and it is one of my favorite weeks of the year.  Reconnecting with friends from Twitter and learning about teaching and math re-energizes me for the upcoming school year. If you are interested in reading more about TMC you can visit the website here.  I shared about my experience from this past summer here and here, but I want to share a few highlights.

Desmos put on a pre-conference, and shared a new Snapshot feature that is now available in Desmos.  You can learn more about it here and here.  In short, it allows you to take a picture of student work from slides in a Desmos activity builder, pick from those screenshots, and project to have a large group discussion.

At TMC, I was able to spend each morning learning how to incorporate more discussion in my math class.  I really appreciated how a lot of the ideas that were shared involved taking questions I already use in my class and changing the way in which I ask them to incorporate more discussion.  Below are a few examples shared with us. Here is the link to the resources from that session.

There were also several excellent keynotes.  Julie Reulbach talked about being a teacher leader.  Her message was very uplifting and one I needed to hear.  I encourage you to watch the recording here.  I know that will be a video I come back to throughout the year when I need encouragement.  You can also see the other keynotes here.

Minnesota was well represented in Cleveland.  Sara Van Der Werf gave a couple presentations:  EL Strategies in the Secondary Math Classroom and The H-Word.  Resources for both presentations can be found here.  Megan Schmidt shared her love for elementary teachers.  Annie Perkins talked about phone calls home, and Dianna Hazelton shared about her stats project.
