Cutler Scholarship Awardee

Congratulations to Greta Bergman!

Greta teaches grades 6-8 mathematics in the Royalton School district. She is enrolled in a Master’s in Education program with an emphasis in teaching, learning, and leadership through Southwest State University.

In her application, Greta shared her anticipated instructional improvements and expected impact on student learning.

Although the math I have been, and will be, learning in these graduate level math courses is beyond what I am teaching as a middle school math teacher, there are numerous benefits for me as well as my students.

I am taking these courses with a colleague who teaches only high school courses in my district. The conversations about the progression of mathematics that students learn from middle school to high school and onto college we have had in the classes we have already taken have been not only interesting, but also valuable. We have had discussions about how the material we are learning relates to the concepts we teach in our classes, and I have been able to take a few things from our conversations as well as what our professors have been teaching us and apply them to what I am currently teaching.

Another benefit for me as a teacher from these courses is that it puts me back in the position of a math student for the first time in several years. It has reminded me what it is like to struggle through a problem and that feeling of accomplishment when you are finally able to figure it out. I also believe that it is good for my students to see that I am committed to being a lifelong learner.”
