Over the summer I rediscovered the book Accessible Mathematics: 10 Instructional Shifts that Raise Student Achievement by Steven Leinwand. The lens is pointed to “engage, and focus on understanding and application.” (p.2) In this time of heightened awareness and action to engage all students and to be culturally responsive in our classrooms, it makes sense to integrate Leinwand’s shifts.

MCTM has established a portal for posting and viewing available math positions. Administrators can post open positions by filling out a simple form. The posted positions can be viewed by anyone.

The Higher Learning Commission has adopted new rules/regulations concerning instructors of mathematics at post secondary institutions. Bemidji State University has put together a variety of graduate level mathematics courses to help individuals meet these new requirements.

I’m not much of a science-fiction reader these days, but I like to keep up on the books my students are reading and this one looked like believable sci-fi. As I read, I realized it was chock-full of mathematical problem solving that my students could understand.

Those of you from Minnesota probably understand that for most Minnesotans the last “official” summer event is the Minnesota State Fair. I attended the fair. I did not eat anything on a stick. I did, however, experience Math On-A-Stick, and it was amazing.

Faye B. Clark and Constance Kamii report “Multiplicative thinking was found early (45% of second graders demonstrated some multiplicative thinking) and developed slowly (only about 48% of fifth graders demonstrated consistently solid multiplicative thinking)”. So how can we support students to develop this type of thinking?
As members of the Minnesota mathematics community, it may be no mystery that the Gopher state opted out of adopting the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics.
