President’s Message – May 2022

Continue the Discussion

By the time you read this, our Spring Conference will be over. If you joined us in Duluth, I hope you enjoyed the conference, gained insight, and feel re-energized to take on the end of the school year. More importantly, I hope that you build on your learning during the conference either with your colleagues in your school or by making connections on social media (Minnesota Math teachers FB group or @mctm_mn).

If you were unable to attend the Spring Conference this year, you will want to start making plans for 2023. The Thursday Symposium April 20th will feature Peter Liljedhal, author of Building Thinking Classrooms. I have found his ideas to be transformative and my students are taking more ownership of their learning. We are delighted that Dr. Liljedhal will be kicking off our weekend and leading school and district teams. The main conference on April 21 & 22 will feature Dr. Liljedhal as our opening keynote and include many sessions about the updated math standards.

Speaking of Standards, the second draft of the math standards which includes grade level benchmarks is set to be posted on May 16th. The public comment period is open until June 13th. The committee really needs to hear from all of us, both about what we like and about what we think could be improved. MCTM will be hosting Virtual Town Halls for discussion (dates and times TBD). Look for updates on the standards at the MDE website (https://education.mn.gov/MDE/dse/stds/Math/).

Wishing you a wonderful end to the school year and a summer filled with fun!
