Equity Opportunity: February 9th

As we enter a new year and reflect on 2020, it is our hope that, first and foremost, you and your loved ones have stayed healthy and safe. As educators, in addition to  COVID and civil unrest, we have navigated distance learning (DL 1.0) in the spring and distance learning (DL 2.0) through the fall. For each of us, this ‘new way’ of teaching and learning has challenged us as students and educators alike. As we, the Equity Committee, write this piece, we want to acknowledge the work that HAS been done as well as the work that continues to BE done. Therefore, we wanted to enter 2021 with a thought and an idea as to how to move forward to establish and/or maintain antiracist mathematics classrooms both this month and again in the April MathBits.

We are leaning on A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction to support this reflection, specifically Stride 1 for February, “How Do I Track What My Students Know?” We hope to continue to reflect on these monthly prompts in Stride 1 for the remainder of this school year and with schedule changes, modes of instruction changes, it may not be possible. Our intent is to share this with you as a resource that could be used within your building with a coach and/or with PLC work.

As the Equity Committee reflected on current practices of its members, the three things that were shared as currently tried resources were Jamboard, PearDeck and Classkick. The big picture for all of us is to navigate ways that students continue to be able to share their voice and thinking to improve and propel that of classmates as well.
