Goals as MCTM Officer

I have attended the MCTM conference in Duluth every year for the last 11 years–longer than I have been teaching.  I always look forward to the conference because I love to learn about best practices in teaching mathematics.  What’s more rejuvenating is being able to network and connect with passionate math educators throughout the state.  As the Region 8 director, not only do I want to increase MCTM membership and conference attendance, but also promote collaboration throughout the rest of the year.  Often times, I feel like I work on an island in rural northern Minnesota.  Even though there are other math teachers in my small school, none teach the same classes as I do.  Several math teachers in Region 8 districts can probably relate.  I want to bring Region 8 math teachers together.  We are not alone.  Let’s learn from each other and support one another.  Additionally, I am ready to learn about what problems exist in Region 8 and will work to provide solutions, which is something I also enjoy!

Current Position

Math Teacher grades 7 & 8
Ordean East Middle School
Duluth Public Schools

Education

B.A. Mathematics and Education, St. Olaf College
M.Ed Learning Design & Technology Saint Mary’s University

Goals as MCTM Officer

As someone who has worked in math education for over 30 years (kindergarten through community college), I have seen many trends and changes. I want to be a bridge between the veteran teachers (digital immigrants) and the new teachers (digital natives) in district 8. I want to bring teachers together to learn from each other. I want to work with teachers to help them see what changes would be best for their students. I feel there is a revolution going on in how we teach math. It is exciting but daunting for those who fear change. I want to be a part of the conversations to help move teachers along that path. I have begun doing this in my own school and it has been well worth the time, effort and occasional setbacks!
