Scholarships Available for Middle School Teachers Taking Mathematics Courses

Next deadline:  Oct. 31, 2015

The Arnie Cutler Scholarship for Mathematics Course Work for Middle Grades Teachers is awarded semi-annually to MCTM members who teach middle school mathematics and who have at least 3 years of teaching experience.

Established in honor of Arnie Cutler, former middle school teacher of mathematics and Executive Director of MCTM, the scholarship is designed to provide financial support for improving middle school teachers’ understanding of mathematics by completing course work in mathematics.   The next deadline for the awards will be October 31, 2015.  Further information, directions, and application materials are available at www.mctm.org/foundation.php.

May Vang, recent recipient of a Cutler Scholarship, used the scholarship to take a statistics course.  After taking the course, May wrote:

College math had always eluded me because I did not understand why I was learning at a level that I would never teach. Then I was faced with students, who asked about why we learn it and why they need to know it. I had taken the statistics course to better to equip myself in telling students what is to come next. They loved hearing and knowing that some day they will learn that one plus one is zero and that we can never be 100% sure of any statistical data. It intrigued them and pushed their curiosity wheels faster. I feel that my students really appreciated a teacher, who fed their curiosity and got them excited for next year or college math.
